ATL’s Truth-Teller on the Mic: Dr. Dee Dawkins-Haigler Wakes Up the City with Power and Purpose

By ATL Black Voices Magazine Editorial Team

When Atlanta rises in the morning, a voice rises with it—fierce, fearless, and full of fire. That voice belongs to Dr. Dee Dawkins-Haigler, the commanding host of Wake Up With Dee on 1380 WAOK, and a woman whose influence stretches from Georgia’s legislative halls to the airwaves of Black America.

Though not born in Atlanta, Dr. Dee has called this city home for most of her adult life—and Atlanta has embraced her as one of its own. Her commitment to the community, her courageous truth-telling, and her passion for justice have cemented her as a powerhouse figure in Georgia’s political and spiritual landscape.

The Morning Mic that Moves a City

From 7 to 10 AM every weekday, Wake Up With Dee is more than just a radio show—it’s a wake-up call. With a mix of unfiltered commentary, powerful interviews, and passionate dialogue, Dr. Dee is giving Atlanta something more than just morning motivation. She’s giving the people a platform.

Her show challenges systems, highlights community voices, and celebrates Black excellence. Whether it’s city politics, national policy, economic justice, or cultural hot topics—she brings it all home with authenticity and edge.

“This show isn’t about soundbites. It’s about substance,” says Dr. Dee.

An Adopted Daughter of Atlanta, A Leader for the Nation

Dr. Dee may not be Atlanta-born, but she’s ATL-made. Her nearly two decades of service and leadership in Georgia—particularly as a former State Representative—have deeply impacted the region. She chaired the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus and the Georgia Women’s Legislative Caucus, working on behalf of families, faith communities, women, and underserved neighborhoods.

Today, her reach extends far beyond the Peach State. She’s a global advocate training women in Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and South Africa. As the Chief Ambassador to the United Nations for the Organization of World Leaders, Dr. Dee brings an international lens to local issues—proving that Atlanta’s influence is truly global.

WAOK’s New Era: Faith Meets Fire

Wake Up With Dee is ushering in a bold new era for WAOK. Known for amplifying Black thought leaders, the station has found its anchor in Dr. Dee. Her gift is bridging generations: elders call in with memories and wisdom, while millennials and Gen Z show up for strategy and solutions.

Dr. Dee is also an ordained minister with a Master of Divinity, so her show flows with prophetic insight and practical application. Listeners don’t just leave informed—they leave transformed.

Her mantra? Faith. Facts. Forward.

From Policy to the Pulpit to the People

Dr. Dee’s life work speaks volumes: she’s a documentary filmmaker (Black Girls Die Too), a bestselling author (Empower Her), and a media commentator seen on major networks. Yet, it’s her heart for people that stands out most.

Whether she’s championing justice for trafficked girls, mentoring rising leaders, or challenging corporate America to do better, she remains rooted in purpose.

“I’m not chasing a platform. I’m building legacy,” she says.

Why Atlanta Listens

In a city that leads culture, commerce, and community organizing—Dr. Dee is a necessary voice. She’s not here to play politics or popularity games. She’s here to speak truth, raise consciousness, and remind ATL of its power.

ATL Black Voices Magazine is proud to celebrate Dr. Dee Dawkins-Haigler as a Voice of Power—a woman of faith, strategy, and undeniable impact who has made Atlanta her mission field.
