Black Girls Rock! Awards Return to Television After Five Year Hiatus

The Black Girls Rock! Awards will return to television this year, following a five-year hiatus and a move from BET to Lifetime.

The previously annual awards show honors “the outstanding contributions of trailblazers, entertainers, icons, community activists, pioneers, business moguls, thought leaders and rising stars,” per the press release. Past honorees include Angela Bassett, Regina King, Ciara and H.E.R.

Black Girls Rock! aired on BET from 2010 to 2019. The event will now move to Lifetime for its grand return, with the awards to be recorded live in Atlanta on June 27 and air later this fall.

“In a momentous announcement, Atlanta, Georgia, has been declared the host city for the 2024 Black Girls Rock! Awards, marking a significant milestone as the city becomes the new epicenter for the world-renowned celebration,” the release reads.

Atlanta’s Fox Theatre will host the show, which is “set to be the highlight of a broader, city-wide Black Girls Rock! Experience,” the release continues, and “will feature an array of events and celebrations throughout Atlanta, including The BGR! Expo, and the annual BGR! Film Festival, The Black Cloud Tech Summit and the BGFEST concert series, further cementing the city’s status as a cultural hub and celebrating the achievements and spirit of Black women globally.”

The event’s return was announced via a partnership between Black Girls Rock! founder Beverly Bond and Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens.

“Atlanta’s vibrant cultural heritage provides the ideal backdrop for our celebration,” Bond said. She added that “Atlanta represents a critical juncture for our brand,” saying mayor Dickens’ leadership is “characterized by his dedication to community, cultural enrichment, innovation, and equity.”

Dickens added, “We are thrilled that Atlanta has been selected as the host city for the 2024 Black Girls Rock! Awards,” saying, “we know that Atlanta is the city that influences everything and the perfect place to host such a historic and influential event. Atlanta has been nationally recognized for our commitment to championing diversity, gender equality, and inclusion efforts and we believe in the power and promise of women and girls.”

The release concludes by saying the event’s partnership with Atlanta “signals the start of a long-term legacy of cultural celebration and empowerment. It amplifies the event’s mission-driven focus, offering not just a celebration but a source of inspiration for future generations.”
